If you’re thinking about how to pack for your next travel, then that means you’re probably about to jet off somewhere. Woop Woop!
In the sheer excitement, it is so easy to pack half of your wardrobe, and then get overwhelmed when you realize you can’t take all of it. Be sure to read my top tips below to prevent you from over-packing and to help you decide on what outfits you should take.
Before you start thinking about packing though, ensure you’ve read through my Guide To Budget, Guide To Destination, and Guide To Pre-Booking. Don’t forget to also check out my Top 10 Travel Safety Tips.
Thou Shall Not Over Pack
First off, commit to yourself that you will not overpack. I have ventured on enough travels to tell you, you will probably not wear half of the outfits that you take. Let alone wear all those fancy pairs of shoes that you thought you needed. So why lug it all around and have to worry about the airport scales?
Making a List, Checking It Twice
When packing for your next travel, be sure to make a list. List everything that you think you will need, and then cross out everything that’s not essential.
TIP: Rather than thinking about individual looks, think about items that you can mix and match.
Yes you can mix and match your outfits and still look cute in your pictures.
How To Choose Your Outfits
When choosing your outfits be sure to consider the following to ensure that you are both comfortable and yet have the dreamy Instagram pictures that you will want to capture.
Fabric
Warm Climate
Cotton: If you’re travelling to a warm climate, cotton clothing should be your top choice. It’s soft, lightweight, and breathable, and as much as you may not want to think about it, it soaks up sweat allowing the heat to escape your body. However, if you sweat a lot, cotton will stain.
TIP: If you want to avoid wrinkles and ironing, opt for a cotton polyester blend.
Linen: Linen is another top choice of fabric to wear in a warm climate. Likewise, it is light and loosely woven which allows heat to escape from your body. Despite absorbing a lot of moisture, it dries quickly so it will have less stain than cotton.
However, the stiff fabric may be uncomfortable for some. So make sure you do try it on for comfort before packing any linen items.
Cold Climate
If you’re travelling to a cold climate, you have a wide range of fabrics to choose from and less to worry about as you can layer as much as you want. Some of these include corduroy, wool, knitwear, flannel, and fleece to say the least. Be mindful that these heavier fabrics may take up more room in your luggage and weight more.
TIP: Invest in a good quality thermal wear to retain your body heat.
Colour Palette
When choosing your colour palette you can’t go wrong with a nude selection mixed in with some dark pieces. Don’t forget to include some clothing with a pop of colour or prints to make your outfits, well, pop.
Tip: If you are planning an outfit for a specific location, always go for a colour that will pop against the architecture. For example, my favourite is red against blue.
