Yes, La Fortuna is very safe. As a young Muslim woman wearing a hijab, I felt very safe exploring the town on my own during the day. Even when I was running around with bags and bags of shopping (to replace my delayed luggage) which screamed tourist with money, I felt very safe.

Although I didn’t walk around the town alone at night, I was with other girls and not once did we feel unsafe. You’ll find locals still sitting around the square late until the night, and everyone that we met was more than polite.

However, that’s not to say to not keep your wits about you when you’re out and about. Especially if you’re a solo female traveller.
